Smoking vs Fracture Risk

Does smoking increase the risk fractures in people? Yes it does.

Risk of fractures in smokers is increased by nearly 2 times compared to non smokers.(1)

Smoking in any form active or passive are equally dangerous.


People with prolonged history of smoking are at high risk of hip fractures after a fall.(1)

Know how nicotine affects your bones

Nicotine stimulates the cells which break down the bone and inhibits the cells which help in bone formation leading to weaker bones.
Smoking causes a decrease in the bone mineral density( makes bone weak), which inturn increases the risk of fractures in smokers.
