When is my suture removal?

Updated: Apr 29

Surgical wounds typically take about 10 to 14 days to heal.

When is suture removal done ?

Suture removal after a surgery is usually done at 10 days from the date of surgery, but your doctor may want to delay it based on the actual condition of the wound.

At one week after the surgery, the tensile strength across an incision is only 3% of that of uninterrupted skin. This figure increases to 20% by the third week when to 80% by three months.

Do's

  1. Keep all surgical wound dressing absolutely dry and clean.

  2. Should you accidentally wet the dressing, please get it changed as soon as possible.

  3. You could wash the surgical site, after suture removal, provided the wound has healed well.

  4. Observe for swelling, redness, discharge and pain from the wound, consult your physician if you find something abnormal.

  5. Take regular medication as prescribed by your treating physician.

  6. High protein diet can help with faster wound healing and faster recovery.

Don'ts

  1. Don't wet the dressing .During the initial phase (i.e less than 10 days from the date of surgery)as macerated skin can act as a foci of infection.
